Frans Hals and his workshop

A4.2 Genre paintings

This section features portrait-like genre paintings from the Hals workshop, that depict figures laughing, singing, drinking, or playing music, and which were intended for the open market – in contrast to commissioned portraits. There is no documentation about the extent to which the master gave his assistants instructions, and it is not evident from the works either.
