These drawings are inscribed on the reverse ‘Mons. Mers. En/huisvrouw’, and ‘Cath: V[U]ulp huisvrouw van/mons Mers’. On the front, the date and the age of the sitters are noted near the upper edge on the right, as they are in the paintings that served as the examples [2][3]. And on the upper left of the copies, we find the inscription ‘Joh. VSpronck’. Slive thought it possible that Johannes Cornelisz. Verspronck (c. 1601/1603-1662) had made copies after Hals’s portraits, which in turn would have been the model for the present drawings.1 This is entirely possible, see also the Portrait of Maritge Claesdr. Vooght and its copy by Verspronck (A3.33 and A3.33a).

D37 Abraham Delfos, Portrait of a family, c. 1750-17922

Black chalk on paper, dimensions unknown
Sale Leiden (Delfos), 19 October 1792, Konstboek A no. 4

In the 1792 sale catalogue, this drawing is described as: ‘A family of four persons, full-length in old Dutch costumes, with intricate collars around their necks, with more details elaborate with black chalk on East-Indian paper, after Frans Hals by A. Delfos’.3 Probably, it was copied after the Portrait of a family in Cincinnati (A3.29).

Abraham Delfos (1731-1820) more frequently created drawn copies after paintings by Hals, for instance the these five chalk drawing of some of the faces from the Van Campen family portrait [4].
